The Thai Net Metering Project project builds on the momentum that was generated with the passing of Thailand's net metering laws -- also known as Very Small Power Producer (VSPP) laws.

These regulations allow small community-owned or small entrepreneur-owned renewable energy generation to connect to the grid and sell excess electricity to utilities. On 7 December, 2006 the Thai government announced important changes in VSPP regulations that now allow each generator to export up to 10 MW to the grid, and offer feed-in tariff subsidies for renewable electricity production. The VSPP program is also now open to efficient fossil-fuel Combined Heat and Power (CHP).

When we started the Net Metering project in 2003, our goal was to help catalyze the installation of at least 10 Megawatts of net-metered renewable energy in Thailand by the end of 2005. This goal was exceeded: as of September 2005, 16 MW were installed. Our current goal is to catalyze at least 100 Megawatts of net metered generation by the end of 2007.

The Thai Net Metering Project works to:

• advocate for fair, safe, and economical grid-interconnection requirements
• identify and work to resolve technical and contractual barriers to net metering
• monitor implementation of net metering in Thailand
• help the interested public identify net metering opportunities
• help potential customer-generators understand the capabilities and limitations of specific renewable energy technologies
• provide access to information about equipment suppliers, sources of finance, and project assistance
